End of week 2 assignments

Please complete the following by 5pm, Monday, Sept. 9:

  • Writing exercise: Choose option 1 or 2 and write a blog post of at least 200 words (more is fine if you are inspired)
    • OPTION 1: Reflecting on George Orwell, “A Nice Cup of Tea”
      • Use the ideas we gathered from using the “Method” of looking in detail through the text.
      • You can develop the ideas you started with in your freewrite in class, or you can do another freewrite and create new ideas to work with: pick a good idea from the freewrite and use that as the core idea of your text.
      • Choose an inviting or descriptive title, which reflects an idea from your piece
      • Add the tag “Orwell” to your post.
      • Add the post to the category “FYS-tea”
    • OPTION 2: Writing from nature: the garden visit
      • Write a blog post based on your observations in the garden, with your thoughts on the relationship between humans and plants. This can be very specific to our visit (ruminating on things you learned or observed), but you can also grow your ideas from these small observations to bigger implications, perhaps connecting to other courses.
      • Choose an inviting or descriptive title, which reflects an idea from your piece.
      • Add the tag “garden” to your post.
      • Add the post to the category “FYS-tea”
  • Optional extra: Write two blog posts, one for each option in this week’s writing assignment.
  • Optional extra: Revise your first blog post based on the feedback you received. Also on your page the Hypothes.is group “teaglobalhistory” for comments and suggestions from the FYS.
    • Remember: writing = rewriting. Your portfolio remains open until the end of the semester, and you can keep on rewriting your pieces as you get better ideas and develop as a writer. If you choose to invest the time in regular writing practice (either revising pieces, or writing new ones beyond the basic requirements for this course), you will become more comfortable with the writing process and sharing your work.

Declaration: read this carefully, then go to Canvas and fill out the quiz:

  • I have created a blog post on my website about either Orwell’s “Nice cup of tea” or our class’ visit to the Community Garden.
  • The post is at least 200 words long.
  • I chose an inviting or descriptive title which reflects an idea from my piece.
  • I added the tag “Orwell” for option 1, or “garden” for option 2.
  • I added the post to the category FYS-tea.
  • Note: In question 2, add on which aspects of your piece you want feedback.
